This 30,000 SF data center, located on W.W. Grainger’s 155-acre corporate campus in unincorporated Lake County, Illinois, was designed to meet both immediate and future technology needs.

Atwell provided engineering, water resources, surveying, and landscape design services, collaborating closely with the client, architect, and contractor to deliver a high-performance, sustainable facility. Permitted through Lake County under the USGBC LEED v4 Beta Program, the project achieved multiple Sustainable Site credits—including reduced footprint, accommodations for green vehicles, expanded open space, and innovative rainwater management with a custom volume-control facility.

Design began in January 2013, with construction completed by summer 2014. The project was delivered on schedule, fulfilling Grainger’s need for an on-site data center with built-in capacity for future expansion.
